My Credentials

DO I HAVE CREDENTIALS?

When it comes to being a business mentor, many people look no further than their professional qualifications. After all, those letters at the end of someone’s name can be symbols of competence, trust and success - both in the eyes of the mentee and the world at large.

But what if you don’t have the traditional credentials that often accompany the mantle of a business mentor?

What if, perhaps, you’re passionate about helping entrepreneurs reach their highest potential, but you lack the MBA or CPA that might get you in the door?

There are a number of reasons why a person without such certifications can still become an invaluable business mentor.

For example myself as a business mentor-  I am passionate and dedicated to working with small businesses, along with having a sound understanding of what it takes to run a small business and the challenges it can have.

Many successful business mentors are ‘self-taught’ in their fields, after engaging with the start-up community and world of SME’s, being an observer and taking the time to understand different business models, approaches to marketing and the struggles of small business owners can be just as valuable as a traditional university education in this arena and not forgetting having their own experience.

Finally, for those without academic qualifications, it is essential to have real-life client reviews (You can take a look at some of mine here)

While credentials are definitely a valued asset in the business mentor space, they are far from a necessity. Having a wealth of experience and passion, combined with a highly motivated drive are perhaps even more important characteristics of being a mentor. With these tools, even the ‘unqualified’ can truly make a difference.
